Factory Girl

I knew of an old factory that had been occupied by squatters for a while and that had some cool old machines still in place. I thought this was the perfect venue for a photoshoot with Jalyssa. These are just a few of the images from that shoot.

My very dear friend Suzanne asked me for a couple of pictures she could use for a bio she needed to prepare. I thought we should do more than just a couple of pictures. So, instead, we did a more elaborate session. We had a lot of fun.

These images look like it might have been a rather stilted and simple shoot. But it was a bit of a learning experience for both of us and many of the more “fun” images turned out poorly.

Okay, I should really have labelled this as Maternity/Paternity, I know. Especially because the father’s relationship to his new child is the main theme of these images.

I approached Mylene suggesting doing a photoshoot of her new baby. She was very excited about the idea. We did the shoot. And the first image above is from that shoot. I especially like this image because her mouth is open just that little bit, it looks as though she is breathing in her baby’s essence. A very intimate moment.

But after I left, I had a thousand ideas spring to mind and they kept swirling about in my head. Ideas of other things we should have tried. Especially I was eager to have the father involved too. So we made arrangements for a second shoot. And we discussed many of my ideas.

I had discussed with Mylene that amongst the other ideas, I wanted to do some images with all three of them naked. These last two images are the result of this second shoot.

I had the chance, a couple of weeks back, to work with a good friend. She’s not a professional model but does this “work” for me just as a favour. I think she’s a natural. Not only is she very beautiful, but she has a very easy manner in front of the camera. She frequently comes up with the best ideas for poses and situations.

We spent a few hours on this photoshoot. It was far too long, really. We were exhausted by the end. But we were having too much fun to think about stopping early. If I had not run out of memory cards, I suspect we’d have gone on a little longer, even though quite tired.

I might post a couple of more images from this shoot a little later. Check back for it ;)

I hope you enjoy what you see and read here :)

I recently had the amazing privilege of photographing a dear friend and her new baby in the most intimate of all settings, while breastfeeding and caring for her new daughter. This was an unexpected opportunity. And an unexpected delight for me.

I found the experience moving and full of joy. It is something I would love to do again with other new moms. There are many things I would have liked to do in this particular photo shoot, but it was my first time working with a mom and baby and I found the baby has only a very limited tolerance for what was going on. Examples of other things I’d have like to try; there is a 3 year old sister who would have been a wonderful third person in many of these images, including the father would have been nice, outdoor settings - just to name a few. These are things I will explore in future sessions.
